Critical thinking traits are parts of a person’s...

Critical thinking traits are parts of a person’s character. Many critical thinking traits are difficult to acquire to a full degree, or to act in a consistent way. As thinkers, we can improve in each of these traits and can develop these traits over time. Being able to fully consider yourself as a critical thinker, developing all of these traits must occur. These character traits can somewhat be difficult to overcome or to improve on certain traits. The two traits, confidence in reason and intellectual perseverance stand out to me the most based on current experiences. Confidence in reason is the habitual tendency to trust reflective thinking to solve problems and making decisions by thinking their way through questions and issues to†¦show more content†¦Personally, I think I do very well in making sure that I am having confidence in reason and not basing my decisions or thoughts based on other people’s influences and without me knowing definitely that she had taken the money. On the other hand, the one trait that I need to improve most on is intellectual perseverance. Intellectual perseverance is sticking with important intellectual tasks until a reasonable conclusion as been reached. To start off with, I am a very impatient person. So when I have to wait long periods of time to get to a conclusion or a plan of action, I start getting this feeling of just not caring and just giving up. For example, in our management class, we worked in small groups to write a ten-page research paper on effective communication. Each member was responsible for looking up two sources and create an outline based on their research that they had received. The night before it is due on Monday, we met as a group to pull all of the information and findings together to create this paper. Well, come to find out, two out of the four group members did not do any research. Going into this meeting, I thought this would be something easy to complete and get through fair ly quickly. So, instead of working towards putting our paper together, I had to help my group members find research. Five Schools of Thought free essay sample

These schools of thought include structuralism, functionalism, behaviorism, Gestalt psychology and psychoanalysis. Structuralism is the school of thought that according to Cherry  Ã‚  (2014), â€Å"Structuralism was the first school of psychology and focused on breaking down mental processes into the most basic components† (Structuralism). Functionalism was influenced by the work of William James and it is a form of response for structuralism. Cherry (2014), â€Å"The term behaviorism refers to the school of psychology founded by John B. Watson based on the belief that behaviors can be measured, trained, and changed. However, Gestalt psychology concentrates mainly on human behavior and mind as one whole in addition, psychoanalysis was first established by Sigmund Freud mostly known for the Id, Ego and Superego. Structuralism was first established by a German Psychologist named William Wundt Structuralism was the first school of thought in psychology, structuralism is the study of another component of consciousness. An example of structuralism is describing an experience at a particular place as giving detailed examples like the park was windy, cold, and calming. However, Functionalism, unlike structuralism was formed as a response to structuralism. Functionalism was influenced by the work of William James and Charles Darwin’s evolutionary theory (Cherry,  2014). Functionalism focused on the purpose of consciousness and behavior rather than the components of the consciousness (Cherry, 2014). Functionalism influenced psychology as much as structuralism did as well as changed the meaning of the educational system. The father of psychology first founded the school of behaviorism, John B. Watson and according to Cherry (2014),The term behaviorism refers to the school of psychology founded by John B. Watson based on the belief that behaviors can be measured, trained, and changed† (Answer). Behaviorism is learned through conditioning and conditioning happens when there is some kind of interaction with the environment. However, there are two types of conditioning the first is classical conditioning and the second one is operant conditioning. When you think of classical conditioning the first thing that comes to mind is Ivan Pavlov and his dogs salivating he used classical conditioning and that is when a stimulus In the case of Pavlovs experiments is the meat is paired with a response that would take the dog to salivate. In addition, Cherry  Ã‚  (2014), â€Å"Operant conditioning (sometimes referred to as instrumental conditioning) is a process of learning that occurs through rewards and punishments for behavior. The main concepts of operant conditioning are reinforcement and punishment; Cherry  (2014), â€Å"Positive reinforcements are favorable events or outcomes that are presented after the behavior† (Components of Operant Conditioning). With a positive reinforcement the behavior becomes stronger because a reward or a behavior is applauded, however, a negative reinforcement is when something is removed when something negative is done in this case the response is also strengthen by removing something that is not positive for the behavior. Moreover, the second concept of operant condition is a punishment; Cherry  (2014), Punishment, on the other hand, is the presentation of an adverse event or outcome that causes a decrease in the behavior it follows. There are two kinds of punishment, positive punishment and negative punishment. Positive punishment is when an unfriendly effect is used to weaken a response and negative punishment happen when something is removed from a positive event or result exists. Operant conditioning can be used with children the most and young teens this school of psychology till this day is used to mold behavior. In continuation, we will discuss what Gestalt psychology and psychoanalysis is. The Gestalt psychology of school has to do with looking at things as one whole instead on individually. Psychoanalysis school of thought was first brought up by, Sigmund Freud. This school of thought is a set of both psychological and psychotherapeutic theories. Psychoanalysis consists of seven terms, which are the case study, the conscious, defense mechanism, ego, Id, super ego, and the unconscious. Its subject matter is psychopathology, or abnormal behavior, relatively neglected by other schools of thought. (Schultz Schultz, 2012,) â€Å"Its primary method is clinical observation rather than controlled laboratory experimentation. In addition, psychoanalysis deals with the unconscious, a topic virtually ignored by other systems of thought. Psychoanalysis has opened a new door to mental illness and when talking to a professional about issues or problems, helps take away certain symptoms of any psychological desolation. If 10 years from now have passed by, the school of thought, I will consider behaviorism as my school of thought. The reason for this choice is because my emphasis is child development and children always tend to have behavioral issues and I would like to help them mold their behaviors into positive behavior. Reinforcement and punishment can always be used to mold a child even a teen, just knowing that moving certain behaviors and enforcing them with positive reinforcement will change a child’s behavior. In conclusion, as far as all the schools of thought they have all had their meaning in helping in today’s psychology from working with children to elderly people. The Five Schools of Thought such as Behaviorism, Psychoanalysis, Functionalism, Structuralism and Gestalts psychology will always be used in the psychology field each and every one of the schools has demonstrated techniques that are effective with people.

Battle of Cold Harbor - Civil War Battle of Cold Harbor - Conflict Dates: The Battle of Cold Harbor was fought May 31-June 12, 1864, and was part of the American Civil War (1861-1865). Armies Commanders: Union Lieutenant General Ulysses S. GrantMajor General George G. Meade108,000 men Confederate General Robert E. Lee62,000 men Battle of Cold Harbor - Background: Pressing on with his Overland Campaign after confrontations at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, and North Anna, Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant again moved around Confederate General Robert E. Lees right in an effort to capture Richmond. Crossing the Pamunkey River, Grants men fought skirmishes at Haws Shop, Totopotomoy Creek, and Old Church. Pushing his cavalry forward towards the crossroads at Old Cold Harbor, Grant also ordered Major General William Baldy Smiths XVIII Corps to move from Bermuda Hundred to join the main army. Recently reinforced, Lee anticipated Grants designs on Old Cold Harbor and dispatched cavalry under Brigadier Generals Matthew Butler and Fitzhugh Lee to the scene. Arriving they encountered elements of Major General Philip H. Sheridans cavalry corps. As the two forces skirmished on May 31, Lee sent Major General Robert Hokes division as well as Major General Richard Andersons First Corps to Old Cold Harbor. Around 4:00 PM, Union cavalry under Brigadier General Alfred Torbert and David Gregg succeeded in driving the Confederates from the crossroads. Moving back to Old Cold Harbor around 1:00 AM on June 1, Sheridans horsemen were able to reoccupy their old position as the Confederates had failed to notice their early withdrawal. In an effort to re-take the crossroads, Lee ordered Anderson and Hoke to attack the Union lines early on June 1. Anderson failed to relay this order to Hoke and the resulting attack consisted only of First Corps troops. Moving forward, troops from Kershaws Brigade led the assault and were met with savage fire from Brigadier General Wesley Merritts entrenched cavalry. Using seven-shot Spencer carbines, Merritts men quickly beat back the Confederates. Around 9:00 AM, the lead elements of Wrights corps began arriving on the field and moved into the cavalrys lines. Battle of Cold Harbor - Union Movements: Though Grant had wished IV Corps to attack immediately, it was exhausted from marching most of the night and Wright elected to delay until Smiths men arrived. Reaching Old Cold Harbor in early afternoon, XVIII Corps began entrenching on Wrights right as the cavalry retired east. Around 6:30 PM, with minimal scouting of the Confederate lines, both corps moved to the attack. Storming forward over unfamiliar ground they were met by heavy fire from Anderson and Hokes men. Though a gap in the Confederate line was found, it was quickly closed by Anderson and the Union troops were forced to retire to their lines. While the assault had failed, Grants chief subordinate, Major General George G. Meade, commander of the Army of the Potomac, believed an attack the next day could be successful if enough force was brought against the Confederate line. To achieve this, Major General Winfield S. Hancocks II Corps was shifted from Totopotomoy and placed on Wrights left. Once Hancock was in position, Meade intended to move forward with three corps before Lee could prepare substancial defenses. Arriving early on June 2, II Corp was tired from their march and Grant agreed to delay the attack until 5:00 PM to allow them to rest. Battle of Cold Harobr - Regrettable Assaults: The assault was again delayed that afternoon until 4:30 AM on June 3. In planning for the attack, both Grant and Meade failed to issue specific instructions for the assaults target and trusted their corps commanders to reconnoiter the ground on their own. Though unhappy at the lack of direction from above, the Union corps commanders failed to take the initiative by scouting their lines of advance. For those in the ranks who had survived frontal assaults at Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania, a degree of fatalism took hold and many pinned paper containing their name to their uniforms to aid in identifying their body. While Union forces delayed on June 2, Lees engineers and troops were busy constructing an elaborate system of fortifications containing pre-ranged artillery, converging fields of fire, and various obstacles. Moving forward through the early morning fog, XVIII, VI, and II Corps quickly encountered heavy fire from the Confederate lines. In the center, Wrights men, still bloodied from June 1, were quickly pinned down and made little effort to renew the attack. The only success came on Hancocks front where troops from Major General Francis Barlows division succeeded in breaking through the Confederate lines. Recognizing the danger, the breach was quickly sealed by the Confederates who then proceeded to throw back the Union attackers. In the north, Burnside launched a sizable attack on Early, but halted to regroup after mistakenly thinking he had shattered the enemy lines. As the assault was failing, Grant and Meade pressed their commanders to push forward with little success. By 12:30 PM, Grant conceded that the assault had failed and Union troops began digging in until they could withdraw under the cover of darkness.
